Covered in the Dust of Our Rabbi: Following Jesus as True Disciples
Dear Walnut Grove Church Family,
In the ancient Jewish tradition, there's a beautiful blessing that says, "May you be covered in the dust of your Rabbi." This imagery speaks volumes about the relationship between a rabbi and his disciples. It paints a picture of disciples so committed to their rabbi that they walk so closely behind him, they become enveloped in the dust he stirs with each step.
This concept isn't merely about proximity; it's about discipleship. It's about a deep, intimate connection with the teacher, soaking in every word, observing every action, and internalizing every teaching. It's about more than just believing in the Rabbi's teachings; it's about living them out, embodying them in every aspect of life.
As followers of Jesus Christ, we are called to be disciples in this same manner. In Matthew 4:19, Jesus extends His invitation: "Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men" (CSB). Notice the depth of this invitation—it's not merely a call to believe in Jesus; it's a call to follow Him closely, to become His apprentices, to be transformed by His teachings and actions.
To be covered in the dust of our Rabbi, Jesus Christ, means to walk so closely behind Him that His ways become our ways, His heart becomes our heart, and His mission becomes our mission. It's about apprenticing under Him in every aspect of our lives—our thoughts, our words, our actions, and our relationships.
But what does it mean practically to be covered in the dust of our Rabbi? It means prioritizing time with Him through prayer, studying His Word, and meditating on His teachings. It means emulating His love, compassion, and mercy in our interactions with others. It means surrendering our own will and desires to His, trusting Him to lead us on the path of righteousness.
Jesus didn't just call His disciples to believe in Him; He called them to follow Him, to walk in His footsteps, and to participate in His mission of making disciples of all nations. Similarly, He calls each of us today to be not just believers but doers of His Word (James 1:22, CSB).
As we journey together as a church community, let us commit to being true disciples of Jesus Christ—ones who are covered in His dust, who walk closely behind Him, and who actively participate in His redemptive work in the world. May we echo the words of the psalmist who declared, "Teach me your way, Lord, and I will live by your truth" (Psalm 86:11, CSB).
May we be fishers of men, casting the net of God's love far and wide, bringing others into the fold of discipleship, and ultimately, into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
In His Service, Pastor Bob
